In the book Divergent, Beatrice shares information regarding her slightly older brother, Caleb. She describes how Caleb strongly resembles his mother in looks and personality. The description of her brother include having their father's dark hair and hooked nose, along with their mother's green eyes and dimpled cheeks. Beatrice also explains her jealousy toward his natural ability of selflessness. This is displayed when he gave up his seat to a man of the Candor faction without a second thought. He inherited this ability from his mother (or at least this is what Beatrice believes). In Abengation, the men and women must follow a set of rules that prohibits selfish acts and encourages selflessness. Beatrice explains that if Caleb wasn't in this faction, he would surely be stared at due to his unique set of features that make him so attractive. He constantly displays acts of responsibility and self discipline in Divergent. This is shown when Beatrice bends the rule of asking about her father's whereabouts at work, when she already knows that dinner time is for the parents to speak and children are only supposed to listen. Caleb gives Beatrice subtle hints to prevent her from speaking anymore at the dinner table. He also displays self discipline when the results of Beatrice's aptitude test are clearly intriguing him, but he must hold back his curiosity due to the secretiveness of the test results. Along with being responsible, self composed, and selfless, Caleb shows evidence of being observant and aware of his surroundings and the people around him. The quote," I can tell by the constant shifting of his eyes that he is watching the people around us- striving to see only them and to forget himself," shows that he is alert to the people around him. In the book, Caleb whispers to Beatrice, "Are you going to tell me the truth now?", knowing very well that his sister is not telling the truth to their neighbors across the street. This is just one sentence out of many that shows his observant and alert abilities. He displays many other characteristics throughout the book, but overall, he is a caring, dependable figure that Beatrice looks up to.
