After hearing everyone ELSE'S opinion about the movie and book called Divergent, I decided to read the book for myself. Initially, I wanted to read a novel solely focused on romance, but after searching and asking opinions, me and my group decided on this one. I imagined the book would contain the same type of action and plot as other romance/action books and had the idea that this novel would be another Hunger Games, but as I read through the first twenty pages, I realized that I could be wrong and that this book could be more than any old fight against the government book. A girl must make one choice that determines her future forever. This one test holds the immense power to decide a person's life. The theme my group chose is Power and Significance. This one choice, and one test that hold this power causes much angst and nervousness in the sixteen year old girl who is about to take the test. The characters must participate in an aptitude test that chooses which faction the individual will continue to live in and follow the rules of for the rest of their life. The character development so far has been interesting from the Candors to the Abnegations to the description of her face. The different factions that represent different qualities also sparked an interest in me. The qualities of the different factions are represented by different symbols including a tree for Amity (peaceful), a small fire for Dauntless (brave), a balance scale for Candor (honest), an eye for Erudite (intelligent), and two hands holding each other for Abnegation (selfless) which is where the main character originates. Even the way the main character describes the way she must not look into the mirror or possess more than one mirror in the house implicates the severity of the obligations pressed onto the people of the certain factions to act with selflessness. The factions dress differently, follow different rules, and even act differently. This can be a scary choice to make as a sixteen year old, so I understand why there is much internal conflict about this subject. Overall, I think this book will be an interesting read (based on the first 20 pages).
